RAMADAN MONTH
Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, the date of which varies
according to the Islamic lunar calendar. During Ramadan, alcohol
is not sold, except to non-Arabs in larger hotels, and smoking,
eating and drinking in public is prohibited during the hours
of daylight. Many stores, banks and offices open late at 09:00
and close early at 14:00.
Ramadan witnesses the revival of many old traditions and customs.
Muslims and Christians alike participate and enjoy the revival
of these traditions. Special sweets and drinks are prepared all
through the holy month. Jordanians stay up very late in Ramadan
shopping, listening to music, smoking “hubbly-bubbly”, playing
cards or backgammon, and chatting.
Sweets prepared usually in the month of Ramadan include a special
pancake stuffed with walnut, sweetened cheese, or cream and cooked
in the oven. It is called “Katayef”. Make sure to try one as
it tasted delicious. Jordanians also drink special drinks that
include “tamarind” or “Tamer Hindi” made out of dried apricots, “Sous” made
out of carob bean. It is also customary to start off the meal
by eating dates and drinking water.
