WASHINGTON, DC (April 2, 2001) – Famed British rock star
Sting will perform at a benefit concert in Amman April 22
as part of his “Brand New Day Tour” that also includes stops
in Dubai and Egypt, the Jordan Tourism Board North America
announced today.
Sting's two-hour live performance will be staged at the
Amman Private University Arena, with a repertoire that will
include old hits from the late 1970s and new smash compositions
from the late 1990s. He will be accompanied by the
Algerian Rai singer Cheb Mami, who is featured on Sting's
mega hit, “Desert Rose.”
Jordan will be Sting's second stop on the tour, following
a two-day performance in Dubai. He will visit Egypt
for a concert at the Giza pyramids on April 25.
Proceeds from the concert sponsored by Fastlink, the Jordan-based
mobile telecommunications company, will support the work
of the Promise Welfare Society (PWS) that provides scholarships
and humanitarian assistance. PWS was established in
1989 under the presidency of Her Royal Highness Princess
Alia Faisal and groups of women volunteers in Jordan.
Malia Asfour, director of the Jordan Tourism Board North
America, said the concert will boost tourism to the Kingdom
since fans are expected to come from across the region and
Europe. “Sting's concert will attract 5,000 fans who
will enjoy the event in Jordan's peaceful, safe and security
environment,” Ms. Asfour said.
Following disbanding of The Police in 1984, Sting started
a solo career with a number of popular albums while participating
in charitable fund-raising events including his support for
Amnesty International and saving the Brazilian rain forests.
